It was difficult for Mary to admit that most of her workout consisted of exercising poor judgment. But somehow this time had felt different. When her brother had called her asking for an urgent favor, she hadn’t hesitated. That’s what family’s for. When he asked her to pick him up from an abandoned cave in the middle of the woods, she hesitated a tiny bit. But then she agreed. No questions asked. That’s what family’s for. When he said to meet him at 7am and she arrived on time, only to wait until past sunset, and still saw no sign of him, she started to doubt. Any time she had trusted someone it had always turned out to be a bad idea. But this was her brother. Family gets a trust card by default. It’s not something you’re supposed to earn. She waited a few more minutes and then started to worry. Where was he? Why was he so many hours late? He wasn’t picking up his phone. Wasn’t reading texts. What was going on? All of a sudden her brother came out from the cave running furiously fast. He was screaming “Start the car! Start the car!”. Mary was both scared and relieved. He was alive. But he also seemed in danger. She started the car and drove off the second he got in. He was panting and looked panicked. She looked in the rearview mirror and asked “What were you running from? Nothing is chasing you.” “It’s not about chasing. It’s about changing. We need to get out of here before the events catch up with the present. I went back in time and changed some things. None of these woods will exist anymore. We need to drive far away so we’re safe.” She looked at him skeptically. “What…?” Her thought was interrupted by the sudden change in ground type, she was driving in the desert all of a sudden. The town ahead of them seemed unchanged, but the direction they had come from had completely changed. She was forced to believe her brother, even though she didn’t understand. She would get her explanation later. She looked in the rearview mirror one last time. The road behind them disappeared, as if it had never been there at all.
