It was difficult for Mary to admit that most of her workout consisted of exercising poor judgment. She was an expert at always making the worst possible decisions. And today was no exception. Her colleagues had convinced her to join them for a spooky night at a haunted mansion. Mary was terrified of ghosts, but since common sense had left the chat long ago, she thought it would be a good idea to face her fears. Besides, ghosts aren’t real. This mansion was probably just old and dirty, nothing more. She arrived at the address at precisely 9pm, as instructed by her coworkers. But everyone else was late. They ended up arriving almost an hour late, with barely an apology. Mary was no longer in the mood, and felt quite disrespected. But she thought, at least, she wouldn’t be focused on the ghosts. They entered the house and the mood was immediately weird. She felt a strange presence, but was too upset to pay attention to it. One of her colleagues, Josh from accounting, pointed to a room and said “This is where the Baron was killed”. Mary felt a chill down her spine. But she followed them in anyway. When all of them had entered the room, they heard a strange noise. They looked back and the door was gone. The door they had just walked through. Poof, not there anymore. Mary started to shake. “What just happened…?” She asked petrified. Her coworkers, who had been very playful until now, were not laughing anymore. Kevin from HR felt the wall. There was no sign that a door had ever been there. The atmosphere turned cold. “W-What now? Are we trapped?” Asked Julia from marketing. “Calm down,” said Josh from accounting, “there’s probably another way out. Let’s look for it.” They all started touching the walls, moving furniture, looking under the bed. Anything that could reveal a secret passage. At last, Julia from marketing found something. A lever, near the window. Should they pull it? They decided that it was worth the risk. They pulled on it and the floor below them disappeared. They all fell instantly. It all happened so fast that no one had time to react. Mary stood up. She felt grass under her feet. They were in the front yard. They all ran out the main gate, following the road that led to the house. After running for what had felt like forever. They finally stopped, and looked back. The road behind them disappeared, as if it had never been there at all.
